The Engage to Change project was created to help young people with learning disabilities and autism find jobs in Wales. Many of these individuals struggle to get work because of misunderstandings and lack of support. The project used a method called Supported Employment, which provides job coaching and training for both the employees and employers.

Over seven years, the project worked with 1,300 young people and 800 employers. Employers who took part received guidance from trained job coaches, and most reported a positive experience. They found that these young employees were punctual, followed instructions well, and worked hard.

However, some barriers remain, such as lack of awareness and stigma about hiring people with disabilities. The report recommends more training for employers, increased job coaching support, and stronger links between schools and businesses to prepare young people for work early.

The project proved that with the right support, people with learning disabilities and autism can be valuable employees. Many businesses said they would hire similar workers again. The findings by the national Centre for Mental Health highlight the need for continued efforts to create an inclusive workforce in Wales.
